MOSAICS, MIXED MEDIA AND 3D CREATIONS (10 Day workshop)

In this 10 day workshop participants will learn the ancient art of mosaics in a contemporary context. Students will acquire the artistic skills of mosaic using indirect and direct application methods. Two projects may be completed using these methods.
On their second piece students will incorporate 3D sculptural effects and mixed media into their mosaic.  Adding sculptural effects can help add interest and perspective to your mosaic artwork.
You can choose to create two artworks or decide on a larger design that involves a combination of all techniques demonstrated.  Please bring along ideas for designs which can only be limited by the creative imagination.  Guidance will be provided to help you achieve the desired outcome.

CREATING AN ARTIST BOOK IN MOSAIC

In this workshop participants will create their own accordion fold artist book incorporating the use of mosaic tiles and found objects from their locality.  The book will be constructed from balsa wood.  The flexible structure lends itself to themes such as childhood memories, holidays, nature themes etc.  By experimenting with a variety of materials the participants are encouraged to create their own narrative in book format.    The selection of the participant’s materials, his/her own style choices and colour schemes all play an important role in the way the project is to be experienced.

Project designs for the mosaic are only limited by the creative imagination and guidance can be provided to achieve desired outcome.  Participants will learn the skills and techniques of mosaics, basic design principles, and tools and techniques including transferring the design, materials, cutting the tiles into different shapes and types of mosaics.  Final procedures of adhering and grouting the work and protecting the work will be also be demonstrated as will OH & S measures

MOSAIC INSTALLATIONS

This workshop is for the creation and production of a large mosaic as a group project.  Suggested project ideas could be table tops, water/garden features, wall panels and murals.    Participants will liaise with the Artist regarding the planned location, placement of mosaic, size and desired materials prior to workshop.  Each project is a unique melding of personal taste.  Garden features evoke serenity.  Courtyards can be enlivened by mosaic features.  A mural can beautify our living environment.  Group mosaic projects encourage community spirit.  There are a number of ways to execute mosaics.  The method chosen will depend upon the project.

3D MOSAIC IN BAS- RELIEF STYLE

In this 2 day workshop participants will learn the techniques and skills to incorporate 3D sculptural effects in a mosaic. Adding sculptural effects can help add interest and perspective to your mosaic artwork.  This workshop is designed as a follow for participants who already have the knowledge of basic mosaic construction.   The artwork will be created to blend in with the outside environment in which it will be placed. The sculptural effects will be achieved by the use of lightweight substrates and material intended for outdoor installation.
